Labe M. Richman

Of Counsel

Labe Richman joined Cohen Forman Barone in 2023 and brought 40 years of legal and courtroom expertise to their post conviction team. He has been named a Superlawyer by Thompson Reuters, has received Martindale Hubbell’s highest rating (“Pre- eminent”), is listed in Best Lawyers in America, and has won the Client’s Choice Award from Avvo with a 10 out of 10 rating. His stellar reviews on Avvo are a testament to all his successes.

As a recognized national leader in the post-conviction arena, Labe specializes in helping immigrants vacate their prior convictions while assisting them in resolving attendant immigration problems. This help includes: 440 motions, writs of habeas corpus, coram nobis petitions, pardon applications to the Governor and criminal appeals. He has been successful with these conviction-attacks in more than a hundred cases. Additionally, when non-citizens must plead guilty, Labe excels in crafting pleas for immigrants that can avoid deportation or bars to legal permanent residence or citizenship. For this excellent work, the Immigrant Defense Project gave him an award in recognition of his “Tireless Fight for Justice.”

Labe’s approach in representing clients is holistic and comprehensive. In reaching the best possible result, he listens, investigates the facts, researches the law, and passionately advocates for the client in court and in his written submissions. He is compassionate and takes the time to earn his client’s trust and to understand the client’s specific needs based on their unique circumstances.

Labe has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at New York Law School and was a member of the faculty of the Cardozo Law School Criminal Appeals Clinic and Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. He has given over 50 lectures to other attorneys in the areas of criminal and immigration law and in 2003 he won the New York County Lawyers Association’s Innovative Continuing Legal Education Program Award in “recognition of his significant contribution to legal education.” He authored a chapter on “Interrogations and Confessions” in Criminal Defense Techniques and published four articles in the prestigious New York Law Journal as well as articles in other publications.

On the lighter side, Labe has performed a one-man show, called “Law and Disorder,” which was covered by Superlawyer’s Magazine.
